We had a great and interesting trip this year. We were supposed to stay until March 24, but did come home early.
We started at the Renaissance Hotel in town for 5 days. It was great to stay in town and to go to some of our favorite restaurants. We could also use the facilities of the Renaissance across the street and also the private island. The private island is great. You do have to get there early to get a palapa. The boat that takes people over to the island is a fun ride.
Next stop was Marriott Surf Club for a week. It was busy as always. We stay in the Spyglass tower. We did a shopping trip to Lings and were ready for the week. We eat breakfast and lunch in and go out for dinner. We do very little in Aruba other than go for a good beach walk in the morning and relax and read quite a few books. Of course there is the fun of lining up for a palapa in the afternoon. Actually it's fun to talk to the other people with you who are lined up for the same reason. Lining up means sitting on a bench or beach chair and chatting and relaxing. Of course we also enjoy the lazy river at the Surf Club. We next headed over to the Ocean Club for 2 weeks. This is quite different from the Surf Club since it is smaller. All but the first 2 floors have been renovated and the new rooms are lovely. We have ocean view rooms at the Ocean club, but the trees do get in the way.
During the first week at the Ocean Club things did start to quiet down in Aruba. At some point the border was closed and the airlines coming in were coming to take people home. By the second week at the Ocean Club things were getting eerie. We managed to get a flight out 3 days early. We were to stay until Mar. 25. We were to spend the last 3 nights at the hotel. We did cancel that. By the time we left the pool area and the beach were nearly deserted. The hotels were almost or completely empty. When empty they were closing. The time shares had a few more people than hotels, but that wouldn't last long. Most restaurants and shops were closed. Lings and Super Foods were open. Someone who went to Lings said that before entering your temp was taken and your hands and cart etc. were sanitized. Aruba was definitely on top of the situation. When we left there were 5 confirmed cases of covid-19. I was impressed with the way the government handled the situation. Aruba is going to go through some very hard times since the economy is tourism based. When we got to the airport to go home everything went well and our flight even left early. I look forward to being able to return next year and I am hoping for the best for our favorite island.
